A dull and wet Saturday morning failed to deter a determined group of the West Tyrone Ramblers. Their goal was Mullaghaneany, third highest at 2070' (627m) of the Sperrin summits.
Banagher Forest a few miles north of Draperstown, gave some shelter in the early stages and by noon the rain had stopped. Mist persisted on the upper slopes, requiring use of compass bearings but the top was reached soon after midday.
As a welcome lunch was taken, the cloud began lifting giving views of Lough Neagh away to the east and Benbradagh looming over Dungiven to the north. Nearing the end of the walk the ramblers descended over great mounds of gravel and sand left by ice age meltwaters some 10,000 years ago.
The next walk, an easier Grade C is to Benbradagh on Saturday November 24. Meet in the Leisure Centre car park at 9.30am. New members always welcome.
