LAST weekend was a relatively quiet one for local clubs in the Sportstraker Ulster league due to a combination of bad weather conditions coupled with teams failing to field. In group "A" the Gortin v Irvinestown game didn't take place although it has been refixed for this Sunday. Monaghan champions Clontibret didn't field away to Aghyaran and so the St.Davogs picked up the points in group "B" but it doesn't matter as Loup have already won this section.
In group "C" Dromore were bidding to build on their opening victory the previous week when they hosted unbeaten Latton but the Monaghan men came out on top on a narrow 2-5 to 1-9 score line to book their place in the quarter final. They led 1-3 to 0-3 at halftime and for forty minutes of the contest they looked to be in control.
Colm McCullagh bagged their goal and he added another major after the break on his way to a personal tally of 2-3, Sean O'Neill and Eoin McCusker their other point scorers.
A mistake at the back though was to prove costly as Monaghan County player Eoin Lennon got in for a goal to turn the game and enable them to just shade the verdict. Dromore host Down side Kilcoo this weekend but that tie is now effectively a dead rubber.
Defending champions Carrickmore are still on course for the quarter finals after getting the better of Kinawley at the weekend by double scores, 2-10 to 1-5. Kevin McNally top scored for the St.Colmcilles with eight points, Benny Martin hit both of their goals with Ronan McNally and Conor McAleer also getting their names on the score sheet. Carrickmore have now completed their four games and they are top of group "E" on score difference from the side that beat them in their first outing Doohamlet.
Rossa still have two games to play in this group and they must win them both by a combined margin of twenty eight points in order to qualify ahead of Carrickmore. The Antrim men travel to play Lavey this Sunday.
In group "F" Donaghmore picked up a handy two points when Scotstown didn't field. The St.Patricks have now completed their programme. They are top of their group but Ballinderry will go through if they win their games in hand beginning with St.Johns this weekend. Derrylaughan followed up their first win last weekend by beating Brookeborough this time, 0-10 to 0-5 the final score line. Brendan and Ciaran Quinn scored half of the Kevin Barrys' tally between them with Kevin Coary, Enda Cushnahan, Fergal McAliskey and substitute Colm Robinson all on target as well. Moy have already won this group and along with Coalisland they are the only two Tyrone sides through to the last eight although Carrickmore look odds on to be there as well.
