SINCE when did it become acceptable for school children to terrorise local business people?
In last week's UH, an Omagh barber lamented the treatment he allegedly experienced at the hands of Christian Brothers Grammar School pupils. Verbally abused and intimidated, when he sought to defend his dignity and his business, the man did what anyone in his situation might, and contacted the school.
He said he spoke to the vice-principal, aired his grievances about the boys' behaviour and was assured the matter would be dealt with. One can only imagine his surprise when, just a few days later, he was told where to go in no uncertain terms by certain pupils. Swearing at a member of the public, hardly mature behaviour.
CBS vice-principal, Foncie McConnell was quoted in your article last week but one can only assume he was under-whelmed by the repeated acts of anti-social behaviour on the part of his students.
He said, "When Mr Brown contacted me there was something done about it but I'm not sure what more he wants me to do. I can't stand outside his premises..."
Here's a suggestion then and it's only a suggestion mind what about asserting some control over your charges, Mr McConnell? That shouldn't be too hard, should it? Aren't those boys who wear the CBS badge supposed to be ambassadors for the school once they leave the school gates?
It's a sad state of affairs when even teachers are unable to instil the barest sense of manners in our young people. It is more than obvious; these guilty parties have not the slightest bit of respect for local people, local businesses or local harmony. Something has to be done and quickly before it gets out of control .
