Family business sets target on cross-border openings

Butyl Systems, a family business in Omagh since 1978, has launched ambitious plans to expand and bring the company into an exciting new cross-border growth phase. This expansion is driven by innovation in its water proofing and water retention product ranges.

Barry McCaul, whose father founded the business, is using the Innovate Programme to help him develop the new product ranges and marketing strategies. Innovate is a joint initiative from Omagh Enterprise Company and Leitrim County Enterprise Board. It is specifically designed to assist local companies to expand using cost effective, dynamic methods. The European Union part funds this programme to the amount of ¤856,391 through the Interreg IIIA Programme, and the Special EU Programmes Body manages it through the ICBAN Partnership. Such strong support enables the programme to be very effective at helping companies to grow via innovation with new direction and focus. The opportunities created by programme participants such as Butyl Systems, show the success that can be achieved.

Butyl Systems manufactures a wide selection of water proofing and water retention products. Products range from roofing, ponds, gutters and water tanks, to waste disposal pits, irrigation channels, building foundations and all kinds of liquid storage solutions. The company currently services domestic, environmental, commercial and industrial customers across the North West.

The company is now in the process of developing new brand marketing strategy and applications for its water proofing technology, including new products such as domestic shower tray liners and seals. It will target identified customer groups in the Republic of Ireland and across Northern Ireland. All Butyl's products need to be installed by licensed contractors so the company will soon begin establishing relationships with additional licensed contractors all over Ireland.

According to Barry McCaul at Butyl Systems, the Innovate Programme has enabled the company to create its future strategy and manage an accelerated growth plan. Commenting on his experience he says, "Innovate helped us to refocus on exactly where we needed to go, to grow the business. It's hard to develop a company and run it on a day-to-day basis. This programme has motivated us to progress our product development and explore new market opportunities at the same time."

Sharon Tracey-Collins, Innovation Officer at Omagh Enterprise Company explains how Innovate helps companies to realise the full potential of their business opportunities. She says, "The Innovate team works closely with the company to enhance its processes and marketing and to develop growth strategies. This assistance helps the company to cut costs and improve its profitability. It also encourages the application of relevant technology and the exploration of new product ideas and new markets. Any company seeking to expand should investigate how Innovate can help."

Barry McCaul agrees, "I would recommend Innovate to anyone looking to develop their company. It offers great support and direction. It makes you focus on what is needed to move forward."
