Fifth man killed on Tyrone's roads in two months

Traffic warning signs for slippery surface are placed on the Drumreany Road at the junction Foygh Road, the scene of a fatal accident in the early hours of Monday morning. JBUH7

AUGHNAGAR man John Rafferty was the fifth person to die on Tyrone's roads in the past two months, following another fatal traffic collision this week.

Mr Rafferty (57) died after his Range Rover overturned at the junction of the Foygh and Drumreany roads, about two miles from Castlecaulfield shortly before 4am on Monday. It is understood no other vehicle was involved.

The death has prompted further calls for motorists and road users to take greater care

"This is another tragedy. John was a good friend of mine, I knew him well, and it is terrible news to start the week," Clogher Valley Sinn Féin councillor Sean McGuigan said. "Unfortunately Co Tyrone has had more than its fair share of fatal accidents already this year. This is yet more bad news for local people to come to terms with."

Earlier in the year a report revealed that Dungannon and South Tyrone had the highest number of road fatalities in the whole of Northern Ireland.

Inspector David Nixon from Dungannon station said Monday's fatality was yet another tragic reminder of the dangers facing motorists each and every day.

"There have been numerous fatal accidents across the province this year and quite a large number have been in the South Tyrone area," he said. I would appeal for people to exercise more care on the roads, not only for their own sake but also the sake of fellow road users."

Anyone who saw the collision, came across the scene or saw the car, a silver Range Rover with a Dublin registration, beforehand is asked to contact police. The number to call is 0845 600 8000.
