1985 - Massive earthquakes in Mexico left more than 4,700 dead and 30,000 injured.
1997 - In the Scottish referendum, 74.3% voted in favour of a Scottish parliament.
2001 - Two passenger planes were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Centre, with the Twin Towers subsequently collapsing. Thousands lost their lives in the tragedy that was played out live on television.
SPORT
1895 - The original FA Cup was stolen from a shop in Birmingham. It was never recovered.
1961- Thirteen spectators were killed at the Italian Grand Prix, when two cars collided and veered off the track.
2000 - IT was reported that the Olympic torch was not only stolen on its way to Sydney, but attacked with a fire extinguisher and used to light a joint.
2006 - Michael Schumacher announced his retirement from Formula 1, after completing the italian Grand Prix.

1966 - 'The Monkees' television show premiered in America.
1981 - Picasso's 'Guernica' was returned to Spain after 40 years in America. The artist had refused to show the painting in Spain before restoration of democracy.
1998 - 'Frasier' won the Emmy for the Best TV Comedy Show for the fifth year running.
1998 - Keiko the killer whale - who starred in 'Free Willy' - was returned to the wild.
2002 - Damien Hirst described the September 11the terrorist attacks as 'an artwork in its own right'. He later apologised.
MUSIC
1956 - Elvis Presley appeared on 'The Ed Sullivan Show'. A third of Americans watched the programme.
1993 - A 13-year-old friend of Michael Jackson filed a civil suit against him, alleging seduction and sexual abuse.
1994 - Oasis's debut album, 'Definitely Maybe' entered the UK album chart at number one.
2000 - Badly Drawn Boy was awarded the Mercury Music Prize for his 'Hour of the Bewilderbeast' album.
