Strule Arts Centre brings a truly unique artist, Redmond O'Toole to Omagh on Thursday, November 19. Redmond's unorthodox playing style and committed musicianship has seen him emerge as one of the most innovative and exciting young guitarists in Europe at the moment.
What makes Redmond unique is his style of playing the guitar. O'Toole was the first to adapt to Paul Galbraith's groundbreaking instrument the 'Brahms guitar' an eight-string guitar played in the position of a cello allowing greater freedom of posture and an extension of the guitar's repertoire.
Highlights of the past year include a tour of Spain with the Chieftains, a BBC broadcast with the Ulster Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Montgomery and a performance with the critically acclaimed Dutch soprano Charlotte Riedjik at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival.
Redmond recently caught the attention of Chieftains' frontman Paddy Maloney, who invited him to perform a piece with the group at the opening of the Belfast Festival, the rehearsal was such a success that he joined them for the entire set and continues to join the group regularly at major venues throughout the world.
Redmond also performs regularly with violinist Elizabeth Cooney and has previously collaborated with Mary Coughlan, the Callino Quartet and the Dublin Guitar Quartet amongst others. He began his performing career playing electric guitar in punk and heavy metal bands.
In February 2008 Redmond performed on the Strule Arts Centre stage with Cora Venus Lunny and the Miro Chamber Orchestra at the outstanding Vivaldi concert.
