ACL Division 3 Round-up

Strabane joint top

Aghaloo 0-11
Strabane 1-11

TUESDAY night's game saw Strabane and Aghaloo in action for the second time in some 50 hours and it was Strabane who narrowly secured a winning double.

It's a victory that moves Strabane joint top of the table alongside Drumquin, although the Tones have a game in hand. The Valley hosts had their noses in front by two points at 0-11 to 0-9 with five minutes remaining but Warner Mullen palmed home a crucial goal to provide a winning platform for the Sigersons.

Strabane led by just a point at half-time(0-7 to 0-6), with Mullen, Stephen Stewart and Brendan McLaughlin in the points mix. Stephen Donnelly, who hit five points overall, Gerard McCaughey and Enda McGarrity edged Aghaloo ahead before Warner's major helped to make the difference.

Drumquin make it six from six

Drumquin 1-11
B Errigal Thirds 0-7

BOTH sides headed into this top four tussle on Sunday cherishing unbeaten records and it was Drumquin who emerged with that tag still intact.

That's six out of six for the Tones now and they saw off one of their main pursuers here, although things were closer than the concluding scoreboard tale tells at face value.

Errigal Ciaran Thirds, boasting three wins and a draw prior to Sunday's significant showdown, shaded a low-key first half 0-4 to 0-2 with Eamon McCaffrey to the fore up front.

Drumquin settled better after the break and a Ryan McCallion major plus points via Paul McLaughlin and Packie O'Kane steered the Tones towards victory. A McCaffrey penalty miss at the opposite end also boosted home hopes.

Guests Glenelly squeeze home

Derrytresk 1-5
Glenelly 0-9

BOTH these teams, despite a few mixed results, have nevertheless constructed a quite promising opening third to their respective league programmes.

Scores were a bit scarce on the ground as the duo met in sunny East Tyrone but guests Glenelly won't be unduly concerned that as they pocketed two morale-boosting points.

The teams were tied on 1-2 to 0-5 at halfway, Joe McKee notching Derrytresk's three-pointer and a few other chances going abegging at either end.

Cathal Nicholas led the scoring charge for a St Joseph's side that won it near the finish thanks to a Ciaran Kearney point. The home team had two men dismissed, with the guests losing one but the St Joseph's were happy to shade the issue and return North winners by just a point.

Beragh well beaten

Beragh 0-6
Strabane 0-13

WARNER Mullen was again to the fore on the scoreboard front as Strabane kept the leaders within radar reach after a comfortable Sunday win in Beragh.

Mullen landed five points, backed up well by Chris Devine on three and John McLaughlin who contributed a brace. John Paul Gallagher was amongst other team-mates to get on the scoresheet.

It was a solid team unit display from the Sigersons who showed ahead at the interval on 0-8 to 0-2 with Mullen and company weaving some magic but the Red Knights were struggling to make an impact.

Beragh tried to respond more positively in the second half but were reliant mostly on Martin Rodgers for scores, Rodgers getting all bar one of their total in the end.

Second half surge

Castlederg 0-5
Aghaloo 0-22

AGHALOO swung over a plethora of points up in Castlederg but the final scoreline hides a spirited effort by the host St Eugene's.

Castlederg competed effectively in the first half and were only two adrift at the midway way juncture on 0-9 to 1-4. But their challenge petered out after the resumption and Aghaloo emerged comfortable winners at the heels of the hunt.

That first half goal for the St Eugene's was supplied by Eamon Friel, with Damien Leonard and Pat Lynch two of their single point providers.

Stephen Donnelly led the Aghaloo scoring tally with eight all told and the Valley men pulled well clear as the second 30 minutes unfolded, Stephen McCarron, Gerard Daly and Damien McCaughey joining others in the scoring spree.
