AN investigation is set to be launched after an alleged assault on a referee at a Fermanagh and Western League match on Saturday.
The unsavoury incident took place during the first half of the Division Three clash between Drum United and Orchard Farm at Cranny Bridge. It is understood that the incident developed after the visitors scored a disputed offside goal
Match official, Michael McGlinchey awarded the goal and subsequently sent off one of the United players for foul and abusive language. And it was while the dismissed player was leaving the pitch that the alleged assault is understood to have taken place.
Mr McGlinchey duly abandoned the match on 35 minutes and no doubt the Fermanagh and Western will launch an official investigation to establish the facts that led to the abandonment, and dish out whatever punishment they deem to be appropriate. If the offending player is found guilty of the alleged assault there are likely to be grave repercussions for the individual concerned and his club.
Any findings will be based heavily on the evidence presented in the referee's report of the controversial incident.
On the playing side of things Glebe United closed the gap at the top of Division One with a 6-4 victory over Shelbourne after leaders Lisbellaw United were held 0-0 by defending champions Enniskillen Town.
The match between Tummery Athletic and Clabby Strollers also finished scoreless while Churchtown and Ballinamallard United Reserves shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. In the remaining top-flight match up Fintona Swifts shaded a five-goal thriller against Strathroy Harps (3-2) at Youth Sport Omagh.
