1509 - Henry VIII was crowned King.

1876 - Custer's Last Stand took place, when Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his men were all killed by Sioux Indians.

1950 - The Korean War began.

1963 - President Kennedy made his famous 'Ich bin ein Berliner' speech. He meant to say 'I am a Berliner' and indicate America's support for the freedom of West Germany. However, what it actually meant was 'I am a doughnut'.

1986 - Police forcibly ejected Ian Paisley from the Ulster Assembly after it was dissolved.

1993 - The Republic of Ireland decriminalised homosexuality.

2000 - Scientists from Britain and America successfully decoded the three billion parts of human DNA to produce a map of the human genome.

2007 - Tony Blair officially resigned as Prime Minister after 10 years.

1906 - The first French Grand Prix began at Le Mans.

1995 - South Africa won the Rugby World Cup.

1996 - American sprinter Michael Johnson broke the world 200m record with a time of 19.66 seconds. 2005 - The Lions suffered a heavy 21-3 defeat in the first Test against New Zealand, after losing captain Brian O'Driscoll to a tour-ending injury.

1951 - CBS broadcast the first network colour TV programme. There were no colour sets on sale at the time though.

1958 - 'A Bear Called Paddington' was published for the first time.

1962 - A government committee recommended the creation of a second television channel - BBC 2.

1995 - Hugh Grant was arrested in Los Angeles and charged with lewd conduct, after being found with prostitute Divine Brown in a public place.

1957 - Jerry Lee Lewis debuted on the US chart with 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On'.

1966 - The Beatles had their 10th consecutive UK No. 1 single with 'Paperback Writer'.

1977 - 'The Muppet Show' album by The Muppets went to number one in the album charts.

2005 - The start of Glastonbury was delayed due to heavy rains, lightening and flooding.
