No excuse for dirty hospital
There is no excuse for a dirty hospital. Digits of blame can be levelled at staff, under-funding or the fabric of the building itself, but when it's people's health, recuperation and ultimately lives at stake, there can be no place for the words like "soiled, dusty" or "rubbish" in inspection reports.
The findings of March's hygiene inspection at...>>> more
Fleadh fabulous celebration in CCE Golden...
The Tyrone Fleadh, held in Dromore last weekend, was a very successful event and a fitting Golden Jubilee celebration for the Dromore/Trillick branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann.
A particularly memorable aspect of the Fleadh was the Cultural Parade timed to be held after Tyrone's victory over old rivals Derry in Casement Park! This...>>> more
Cigarettes should not be displayed
I have just written to the new Secretary of State for health, Andy Burnham MP demanding a total ban on cigarette vending machines.
We don't allow alcohol, fireworks, knives or other age restricted products to be sold from vending machines because we know a face-to-face transaction is the best way to make sure they don't end up in the wrong hands....>>> more
The 'County still open for business
The UlsterHerald published a letter from Kathleen McLaughlin of Omagh on 11 June regarding Tyrone County Hospital. In light of her remarks, I feel it would be helpful to your readers to once again address the background to this issue.
Let me firstly state that the Tyrone County Hospital has not closed down and indeed I can assure the people of...>>> more
Still a danger
Some weeks ago a report was published into sexual abuse in Irish educational and so-called 'care institutions' over several decades. The report concentrated on institutions in the Republic. There was a great gap in the logic which confined the hearings to one jurisdiction and that was the failure to acknowledge that the abusers moved freely...>>> more
Council should maintain rail tragedy monument
Much as I would like to comment on all the various eyesores in the town caused by the lack of upkeep of roadways and footways, litter and the abundance of garish posters bedecking walls, etc. I will confine my comments to what I consider the worst of all.
In November 1950 five railway workers, part of a permanent way gang, were killed at Omagh...>>> more
Thanks to kind Hungarian man

I am in my late 60s and disabled so as you can imagine I was feeling very shocked.
I would like to thank a young Hungarian lad in a white van who was...>>> more
Teachers no regard for new curriculum
Recently I have read all the paraphernalia from primary schools and in the press re the transfer process and I am baffled. These statements from the likes of the West Tyrone Principals Group talk about their beloved Revised Curriculum and how preparing for a transfer test distorts the curriculum and the teaching of children.
Many teachers I know...>>> more

Public enquiry needed at Omagh
There were two public enquiries into 'Bloody Sunday', a most regrettable incident which occurred in Derry in 1972 and in which 14 people died. More than twice this number, 29 people died in the Omagh bombing of 1998 and to date there has been no public enquiry.
The civil case brought by the relatives of the victims of this disaster was successful...>>> more
