Mixed fortunes for controversial Letterkenny developments

BY CRONAN SCANLON

THERE were mixed fortunes for two Letterkenny businesses this week following decisions made by An Bord Pleanála (ABP).

The planning appeals board granted permission for a controversial quarry extension at the Mountain Top, however, permission was refused for a new hotel and bridge over the River Swilly at Tullygay.

ABP granted permission to Mountain Top Quarry Ltd for retention of the removal of top soil and extension to their existing quarry at Calhame.

An appeal was lodged by the Calhame and Ballaghderg Residents' Action Group claiming the quarry would impact on their adjoining properties by way of dust, noise, blasting and sludge on the local road network.

"The failure of the applicants to operate the existing quarry in a satisfactory manner does not inspire confidence," their appeal stated.

However, the quarry owners argued that the quarry had been in existence before the new houses were built in the area.
