Mrs Ita Kane, Enniskillen

The death took place of Catherine Bridget (Ita) Kane, peacefully, on 9th March, aged 90 years. She will be best remembered for the personal service which she gave to her many customers during 60 years as a Pharmacist at Darling street, Enniskillen.

Born in April 1917 in Mullaghdun, Co. Fermanagh, Ita was the third of the five children of Michael and Susan Headon (nee Farmer).

She was educated by the sisters of Mercy, Enniskillen, attending the Convent Primary School and Mount Lourdes Grammar School. Her favourite subject was English literature and to her dying day, because of her amazing memory, she was never lost for an apt quote. This could be mild or caustic. (The latter she reserved for family).

Her Grammar School education was complete in 1936 and, following her mother's advice, she chose Pharmacy as a career. She was fortunate in her mentor, Mr. Billy Maxwell, in whose Pharmacy in Belmore Street she was to spend four happy years 'serving her time' as an apprentice.

In 1943, Ita went to College in Belfast and while there she met Charles Kane, a young Pharmacist, originally from Cookstown, Co. Tyrone. Ita qualified in 1945 and she and Charlie were married in the same year. In May, 1948, they opened their small Chemist Shop in what is now No. 13, Darling Street, Enniskillen. In 1958, they bought No. 15, Darling Street and moved the Pharmacy and family there. Ita was by that time the mother of six children. Her seventh and last child was born after the move to No. 15. For the next 20 years she was fully occupied with business and family.

Following the sudden death of her husband in 1979, she continued to work in Darling Street for another 29 years. She enjoyed the daily contact with customers and staff. She took holidays at home and abroad with her children and grandchildren.

Ita was steadfast in her beliefs and standards. She supported many causes and was always there for everyone - until about a year ago when she began to fade away. She faced death as she had faced life, with absolute determination to deal with it. Nothing was disrupted and nobody inconvenienced. It was only in her last ten days that she yielded to the care of others.

Ita Kane is survived by her children, Paula (Tom), Maurice (Teresa), John, Michael (Deirdre), Susan (Charlie), Brian (Margaret) and Nuala (Brendan) by 16 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and by her sisters Sheelah and Joan. They and many others miss her greatly but are comforted by the knowledge that she lived a full, contented and productive life, using her God given talents for her own good and the good of others. She had the right prescription.

The funeral arrangements were by S.R. Elliott and Sons, Darling Street, Enniskillen. Donations in lieu of flowers to Cancer Research.
