Piping hot!

Jack Maguire, co-founder and trainer of the St.Mary's Pipe band Mountain Road Derrylin still keeps a active interest in the band pictured listening to band members Eamon Lynam, Gerry McManus, Pipe Major, John Gilleece, Elaine Cassidy and Jim Maguire. GKFH71

This year, the Mountain Road Pipe Band, Teemore marks its 60th anniversary and, by way of continuity, its co-founder and trainer, Jack Maguire is still at the helm. He has taken it upon himself to put together a book charting the band's evolution from a flute band to one of the most recognisable bands in the county.

The book is expected to be available early in the New Year and, in the meantime, anyone who has old photos of the band is asked to loan them to the Book Committee for scanning and return.

One of the younger band members, Gerry McManus, whom people can contact with photos for loan, was one of three brothers who played with the band (Peter is now in Canada) and is two sons also.

"There's an average of 26/27 in the band. How do we get them out? It's hard to et them all at the one time, what with club football commitments and so on. But, we have around 18 that come out, which is very good.

"Yes, there's a distinct family connection. For instance, Jack's daughter, Elaine and his son, James are band members. We would like more younger ones, although we have a fair number."

The season for the Mountain Road Pipe Band kicks off on St Patrick's Day and then gets really hot during June, July and August. Some of its members are from Cavan and, in fact, the band fulfils dates across Fermanagh, Cavan and Leitrim.

"We play anywhere and everywhere", Gerry added.

Anyone with old photos of the band should contact Gerry at - 67748595 or 078 16853789.
