An Irvinestown-based band has plenty to 'blow about' this year! Drumharvey Pipe Band celebrated its 75th anniversary at its annual barbecue and dance on Friday evening last.
Current and former band members, family, friends and supporters gathered at the Woodhill Hunting Lodge to mark the historic milestone.
After an enjoyable meal, guests were treated to a musical interlude by the younger members of the band.
Band secretary Bryan Gray thanked those in attendance for joining in the night of celebration and nostalgia, before officially launching a commemorative booklet, charting Drumharvey's three quarters of a century in existence.
Containing photographs and associated stories, the publication is intended to serve as a keepsake and a valuable fund-raiser.
Appreciation was directed to the numerous sponsors who made the project possible.
Former Drum Major Harold Stewart, who led the band for over 40 years, shared with the assembled crowd some of his fondest memories while on parade and paid tribute to the current membership.
A special anniversary cake and a display of photographs and old memorabilia added to a memorable occasion.
Music on the night was provided by the Bracken Brothers.
Later in the evening, Dale Robinson played a selection of tunes on the bagpipes dressed in the attire of the band's former uniform, the familiar Black Watch tartan.
Bryan Gray paid tribute to the band's durability through the years.
"To reach a landmark such as 75 years is an achievement for any group, particularly a voluntary organisation," the band secretary said.
"The fact that hundreds of people have, and continue to give of their time freely over the past three-quarters of a century to sustain such an institution is a credit to each and every one of them. The dedication and musical skills of hundreds of men and women through the years, has kept alive a proud tradition."
Drumharvey Pipe Band was formed in 1934. The band derived from Drumharvey LOL 159 whose members at the time expressed a desire to have their own marching band to accompany them at parades.
The current band currently has a membership of 22. The oldest member is 66, while the youngest is eight-years-old.
Drumharvey is the only remaining marching band originating from Irvinestown.
