Brookeborough motorist fined

Driving through a red light and refusing to accept a fixed penalty for the offence has led to a court appearance before Fermanagh Magistrates Court for Bryan Johnston (31) from Kilarty Road in Brookeborough.

The court heard in evidence that on 14th November last year police were stopped in traffic at the pedestrian lights at Queen Street in Enniskillen. The lights turned red and had been red for about two seconds when a vehicle driven by the defendant drove through the red light. A pedestrian was waiting to cross at the time. When questioned by police the defendant maintained the light was amber.

Defending, Garry Smyth said that police were prepared to deal with this with a fixed penalty as the lights had just turned red. However, the defendant thought he was safer to proceed through the lights and didn't accept the fixed penalty offer at the time.

Mr Smyth says his client now accepts he should have taken steps to stop. Mr Smyth said his client was returning home from work at the time and that there was no question of any third party being in any danger.

The defendant was fined £100 with three penalty points added to his licence.
