Samaritans offer suicide advice

In light of the influx of suicides across the North in recent weeks, the Samaritans have urged people to use them as a channel to air their feelings.

The Omagh Samaritan branch said it is working in partnership with internet service providers to ensure options for vulnerable people are actively promoted across the online environment.

"Many service providers act quickly to close down sites of this nature. Unfortunately, they often reappear rapidly" a spokesperson said.

It is important to remember that there is never one single reason for someone to take their own life. Overwhelming feelings of despair and hopelessness are often caused by multiple problems building up over a long period of time. In this situation a breakdown of coping strategies can lead to someone feeling that suicide is their only option. And suicide is always a tragedy for those left behind - family, friends, colleagues, even an entire community."

If you would like to talk to someone, you can contact your local Samaritans branch on 028 82244944 or drop in to 20 Campsie Road.

Alternatively you can call the national helpline on 08457 90 90 90 or email jo@samaritans.org.

Skydive for charity

RNID NI is calling on superhero wannabes to sign up for the charity's skydiving programme and fulfil their childhood dreams of flying through the air.

The charity, which represents the 219,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in Northern Ireland, is inviting adventurous people inspired by the recently launched Fantastic Four movie to sign up three friends, family or colleagues to become fantastic flying RNID fund-raisers.

Taking place at weekends at an airfield in Garvagh, the skydives from approximately 10,000 feet are the ideal opportunity to experience the excitement of falling through the sky, while raising vital funds to change the world for deaf and hard of hearing people.

The skydiving is free to fund-raisers who raise a minimum of £390 for RNID. For more information contact Caroline on 0845 634 0687 or email: events@rnid.org.uk
