Belleek family seek to have 'graveyard ban' lifted

Teresa O'Connor wife of the Late Vincent and his brother Liam photographed with her husband's grave in the back ground.

A Belleek family whose late father, according to the Clogher Diocesan Office, is buried in an unapproved graveyard beside Mulleek Chapel, and whose wife has been banned from visiting her husband's grave on foot of a High Court injunction granted to the diocesan authorities, have embarked on a 'human rights' petition to have the injunction lifted.

This week, the family of the late Vin O'Connor contacted the 'Herald' expressing their desire to have a mention in the paper in regards to a human rights' petition for 'a Mulleek widow', their mother, Teresa.

"We are going to try to have the High Court injunction lifted off Teresa O'Connor whose husband passed away on 24th december, 2004. The High Court injunction was taken out by Bishop Joseph Duffy and, since the burial, Teresa has not been able to visit the grave.

"As their 30th wedding anniversary is later this year, and we feel it is her human right to visit the grave, we are looking for public suport to have the injunction lifted. The petition will be forwarded to the Bishop of Clogher".

A statement from Diocesan Office, by way of response to the proposed petition, read: 'The injunction was sought by the diocese as a means of protecting the right of the diocese in the use of diocesan property. The court's decision in granting the injunction upheld this right and still stands.'In practice, no one has been impeded in visiting any grave in Mulleek'.
